Music Video Analysis- Beach Location

One of my ideas for location has been the beach. I like the idea of setting a video on a vast open space with the stripes of colour a beach provides. To research music videos that have used this location effectively I have completed a detailed analysis of the video "Yellow" by Coldplay.

  1. This needs to be labelled research, as opposed to planning.

Some good consideration of the progression of the video through the song, along with terms such as panning.

T: Try to incorporate Goodwin's theories into your analysis.
T: Include reference to pace of editing.
T: Consider your video as a performance-based (of sorts). The fact it was their fist single meant that the artist needed to be introduced.

  2. Andrew Goodwins theory of music genre conventions is clearly demonstrated within this music video. The demands of the record labels are seen through the almost complete focus on the artist within this video, there is little time when he is not present within the frame. The shots are very slow and long, as the camera lingers on the artist which does create a slow pace of editing and also an amplifying of the character on screen. This is a performance based music video that does have an underlying style of a concept based music video but focuses mainly on the performance of the artist themselves. Since this was Coldplay's first single this is understandable as the artist needed to be introduced and the audience needed to come to recognise his appearance or visual style to boost his publicity.
