First review of feedback from screening questionnaires

ROUGH CUT- UNFINISHED MUSIC VIDEO SCREENING- FIRST VIEWING-QUESTIONNARIE RESULTS

I have collected in my questionnaires and read thoroughly through the feedback I have received. Here I have listed each question and given a short summary of the feedback, including any particular likes/dislikes and suggestions for improvements. This has been a very valuable activity as I now have many improvements to make to my music video that will be specifically derived from my audience; I have included the improvements I intend to make below.

1.      Within the opening sequence, should the shots of waves be cut down? Or kept the same with text added?
From this question I received a mix of answers. Most people felt adding text was not a good idea, and though a few suggested cutting down the shots most did not. From this feedback I intend to slightly alter my opening sequence so that the shots are smoother and flow nicely- not dragging out the start.

2.      Do you feel the cuts are timed correctly to the music?
The majority of answers for this question consisted simply of ‘yes’ or ‘mostly’. However one answer stated that the shots were all of a very similar pace, this I have edited purposely to be in time with the music as the beat is very repetitive- however I may be able to mix up the editing to hold my audience’s attention more.

3.      Should a filter be applied to scenes to increase the brightness?
For the third question the answers came back as ‘yes for some’. There were also suggestions for certain scenes- for example the scene when my characters emerge from the pinewoods. I am aware that the scene does look murky and dark as this was due to the very poor filming conditions and weather on the day. To work from this feedback I intend to apply a filter to the darker scenes.

4.      Do you think any effects should be added to the video? Any suggestions?
Suggestions for effects to be added include; slow motion, vintage filters, a soft edge/blur, black and white for sections, stop motion and colour overlays. To work from this feedback I will experiment with the filters I can use within the editing software, and perhaps get more feedback from classmates to decide on one.

5.      Is there too much focus on nature and not enough on characters?
From this question I received a combination of answers; however the overall reaction I received was that there was not too much of a focus on nature. However some people did suggest that there was not enough build-up of the characters and that the narrative link to the lyrics did not really make sense. Despite this, my music video has always been set out to be a concept based video which has no real strong narrative or character build up- this could be off putting for my audience if they expect a story.

6.      Do you think the music video is fitting for the genre of the song?
This answer came back as 100% yes definitely. This result I am pleased of as in my target audience survey I asked the question ‘Should a music video be fitting to its genre’ and the answer also came back as yes. This means that ideally my target audience will find my music video fitting to the genre and be attracted by this.

7.      Should there be any transitions added? E.g. crossfades?
The majority of answers for this question came back as ‘no’. Despite this a few answers did suggest soft fades or blends to make the video flow more. I have used allot of blunt cuts in my music video and I think that using a blending transition would improve the flow, therefore I intend to work from this feedback and edit a few transitions in.

8.      The end includes a few clips which are re-winded- should this be edited out or do you think it works well?
For the eighth question I have received feedback that the reverse section does work well to round off the video which I am pleased with as this was the desired effect. However a few answers did suggest that some of these clips could be slowed down to let the audience appreciate the shot. This is something I intend to work on and improve from this feedback.

9.      Do you feel the end of the music and fade to black is too abrupt?
The answer for this question came back as mainly ‘no’ although some people did suggest that the fade could be a little more gradual to encourage the flow of the music video. This I could easily adjust to work from this feedback. I also received the feedback that the audience liked how the music video ended on the final note which was pleasing to see.

10.  Any final improvements?
Final improvements and feedback of suggestion included varying pace of the clips, including more narrative and a colour filter to improve the visuals of the scenes.

Rough cut and screening

Today I will screen my first rough cut to an audience to gather feedback. To do this I have compiled a questionnaire for the audience to fill out whilst watching. Hopefully this will enable me to edit and change my music video further to comply with my audiences preferences and increase appeal for my target audience.

Research into an aspect of the music industry

The aspect of the music industry I have chosen to research into is music festivals. Music festivals have become a huge part of the industry, each summer music festivals seem to grow in both size and popularity. Today you can judge an artist or bands success by how large their name is written in a festival line up, and festivals are a big deal for the music industry as a whole. Just within the UK there are hundreds of music festivals including names such as Glastonburry, Reading & Leeds, V festival, Boomtown, Latitude, NASS, Hop Farm, Secret Garden, Wilderness etc etc As a regular festival goer from a young age I have been lucky enough to experience this vast if somewhat mad industry and have visited a range of music festivals. I have chosen two contrasting music orientated festivals to study in depth: Glastonburry festival and Latitude festival. These two festivals differ greatly in both size, audience and content- I have also been attending both for many years so I am able to talk first hand of figures and my own experiences.

 Audience
Latitude offers a weekend ticket, a weekend family ticket, an accompanied teen ticket, a child ticket and various campervan/caravan combination tickets. This shows that the audiance for Latitude is family orientated as the festival caters well to a familys needs with a specific area for children to avoid disturbances. The audiance for latitude are also on average of a good yearly income as ticket prices for a family weekend ticket are quite pricey at £182.50- keeping in mind that Latitude is a very small festival. The festival however as stated on the website is "more than just a music festival". Latitude attracts a wider audiance and possibly older audiance of intellectuals with its literary tent and comedy arena which are a large feature of the festival. The childrens area for Latitude is also a big feature and attraction for families.

Performance

The ratio of british bands to foreign is mixed within the latitude playlist. The headliners for 2013 were Bloc party who are British, Kraftwerk who are German and Foals who are English. English or British artists who also featured at the Latitude festival include Local Natives, The Maccabees, Hot Chip, James Blake, Alt J, Disclosure and Rudimental. This shows that Latitude has focused on showing mainly British bands as it is a British festival. However artists such as Grizzly Bear, Cat Power, yeah yeah yeahs and Beach House are all from the USA which proves to be the second most popular region of source.

The representation of gender in the line up is heavily leniant to the male gender, with seven out of eleven artists in the headliners being entirely consisted of males. I doubt this was done intentionally but it does reflect the ratio of male to female artists in this aspect of the music industry as a whole.

Audience

The tickets avaliable for Glastonbury only come in one format. Everyone must pay the same amount, under 13s go free but all others are charged. This shows that Glastonbury's audience is not aimed at families as their is no offer of a secluded quieter area for children and there are no discounted tickets. However Glastonbury festival is as a whole allot larger than the tiny Latitude, so I must take into account the scale on which these tickets are being sold. Glastonbury's audience are mainly young people in their twenties, however there are many people of all ages attending this giant festival. This shows that Glastonbury offers a wide range of attractions that appeal to all ages. Glastonbury is a "festival of contemporary performing arts" and allthough it is most famed for it's music which it bases around, there are also many, many other attractions such as theatre, circus, comedy etc.
 Peformance
There is such a large line up for Glastonbury festival it is hard to analyse the perfomance and ratio of one artist type to another. However I will analyse the headliners instead and try to conduct some idea of the perfomances. The ratio of British artists to foreign is also mixed within the Glastonbury playlist. The main headliners of the nights were The Arctic Monkeys who are English, The Rolling Stones who are English and Mumford and Sons who are also English. This shows that Glastonbury is prodominintley a Brtish festival and stays true to it's English roots. English or Birtish artists who also featured in the Glastobury line up include; Portishead, Chase & Status, Dizee Rascal, Primal Scream, The Vaccines, Two Door Cinema Club, Foals, Enter Shikari, Alt-J, Jake Bugg and Ben Howard. However bands such as Public Enemy, Vampire Weekend, Seasick Steve and Major Lazer also featured on the main stages and are all descending from the USA. Despite this it is clear that the majority of artists featured at Glastonbury festival are from Britain, making it a truly British festival. The representation of gender is mostly equally distributed between artists performing here but there is such a wide variety and great number it is hard to tell. No gender sticks out as being a majority within the festival.

Contrast
Whilst contrasting and comparing these two festivals I have been able to get an indepth knowledge of this very influencial and popular aspect of the music industry. Whether the festival be small and family orientated or vast and youth targeted it still proves a hit with a wide variety of audiances. This makes it a powerful tool and aspect within the industry.

G324: Audience Profile Research Task (2)

Audience Profile

Fashion-
The fashion of a stereotypical audience for these bands would follow the styling of the bands, wearing the same kind of clothing they see on the artists. Fans tend to try and copy or reprecate the kind of clothing their "idols" wear. Therefore I think that a stereotypical fan would wear clothing such as jeans, shirts, shorts, casually coloured/patterned tops. The materials found could follow as cotton, nylon, denim, leather.

Liesure Activities-
The bands I have chosen do not voice any particular leisure activities that a fan could follow. However I would assume that the stereotypical audience member would be a great fan of music, and attend many gigs/concerts. Also the three bands often attend festivals so the stereotypical fan would also enjoy and regularly attend festival event.s

Socio Economic Background-
I feel that this kind of music appeals to people from a wide range of socio economic backgrounds so it is hard to specify a particular background to the genre.

Tribes.com

When I took the Channel 4's Tribe test I got the result of "Indie Scenesters"

I agree with this "tribe" to a certain extent but feel it is too general and some of the Tribe aspects do not apply to me at all. The questionnaire asked very specific questions and I found none of the answers were true for me. Therefore I picked what I thought to be closest and thus produced a result I was not 100% compatible with. I do think this tribe reflects a musical preference, but as I tend not to stick simply to one genre it doesn't reflect my musical preference accurately.
